This paper draws principally from COVID-19 diaries written by young women whom we had previously trained as peer researchers in a mobility study of low-income neighbourhoods in Abuja, Cape Town and Tunis. This includes whether/how much they need to travel or can substitute virtual for physical travel; which transport mode to take and when; what precautions they must take on the move; what strategies of engagement are required to cope with externally imposed rules and contingencies – and the potential impact of their negotiations, decisions and experiences on the health of those dear to them at home.

Studies have proven that the 4IR technologies could enhance airline governance and improve safety measures and productivity. The 4IR role in improving airline governance is yet to receive in-depth studies in South Africa. Thus, this study aims to investigate the governance challenges facing South African airlines in the era of 4IR.

This paper shows the importance of market structure in determining a corruption equilibrium. We do this in the context of highway merchandise transportation in West Africa, where checkpoint officials frequently stop truck drivers for petty bribes. This work demonstrates the importance of competition among corrupted officials to facilitate public services for drivers and suggests that the effectiveness of a local intervention can be offset by reallocating customers towards officials who are not affected by it.

Transportation in SSA is petroleum dependent and driven, with diesel fuel being the most used for heavy-duty vehicles, contributing significantly to the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the region. The paper discusses cashew nut post-harvest residue suitable for production of CNSL an inedible biodiesel feedstock for diesel engines. The study concluded that utilization of CNSL biodiesel can reduce the dependence of SSA on petroleum diesel while reducing GHG emissions.

Informal public transport has been growing rapidly in many developing countries. The paper shows that combining these improvements and fare adjustments, the informal transport sector can contribute to increasing people’s mobility and reducing traffic congestion in the city.

This paper reviews two recent World Bank publications and 49 peer-reviewed papers on rail travel in Africa that were published between January 2000 and June 2022. The results showed that technological integration, shuttle services, and electric-powered train penetration were all poor.
