Africa's railway renaissance and sustainability: Current knowledge, challenges, and prospects

In addition to two recent World Bank publications on rail travel in Africa, the review included 49 peer-reviewed papers that were published between January 2000 and June 2022. The results showed that technological integration, shuttle services, and electric-powered train penetration were all poor. There are still knowledge gaps regarding passenger demand, price optimization, scheduling issues for routes, and testing of transport emissions. More empirical research is needed to determine how railroad projects will affect the preservation of wildlife and the transformation of land cover. According to the analysis, previous research did not take into account thoughts on regulations, planning, planning processes, and the potential and difficulties associated with policy interventions. Potential realisation strategies have been established, and include proactive regional action plans, standard gauge railroad implementation in selected regions, and railway training factories. This work adds to the existing body of information and suggests areas of further research.
